Ori Gersht Biography

Born in Israel in 1967, Ori Gersht has lived in London for more than 20 years. His work is concerned with the relationships between history, memory and landscape. He explores the difficulties of visually representing conflict and violent events or histories by pushing the technical limitations of photography, questioning its claim to truth. Gersht's imagery is strangely beautiful, presenting a compulsive tension between beauty and violence. He has explored his own family’s Holocaust experiences, created a series of post-conflict landscapes in Bosnia and a trilogy of slow-motion films in which traditional still lives explode on screen.
