Sol LeWitt Biography
Solomon "Sol" LeWitt was the only child of Russian Jewish parents and was born and grew up in Connecticut. Conceptual art as explained by LeWitt is an intellectual, pragmatic act in which the idea itself could be the work of art. LeWitt's work included sculpture and painting to almost exclusively conceptual pieces. LeWitt would often give assistants directions to produce an art work that were deliberately vague so that the end result was not completely controlled by the artist that conceived the work. Art, for LeWitt, could exist for its own sake. Meaning was not a requirement.
